Most of the components tucked beneath its hood are ingenious innovations that were formerly only deemed possible by visionaries like Ferdinand Piëch.
Boasting a maximum speed of more than 400 km per hour, the Veyron is unmatched in the super sports category. It offers a total of 1,001 HP, and its ample power reserves even at high speeds are the fabric of dreams for luxury-class limousines: for a constant speed of 250 km/h, the Veyron only needs 270-280 HP. This means that the seven-gear clutch transmission works with a torque of up to 1,250 Newton meters. The Electronic Stability Program (ESP) ensures the necessary flexibility and maneuverability at any speed. The Veyron reaches velocities that would literally lift the car off the ground -- if it weren't for its ingenious aerodynamics, which keeps it firmly on the road even at full speed. Adjusting the back spoiler, reducing ground clearance, opening and closing the lids -- it all adds to the perfect balance between propulsion and downforce. Such a super sports car may not seem to be brought to a halt easily, but the Veyron's ceramic brakes slow it down faster than it can accelerate. While it takes this exceptional car only 2.5 seconds to go from 0 to 100 km/h, it needs even less time -- a mere 2.3 seconds -- to come to a standstill from 100 (reference point). To reduce the risk of injuries in accidents, Bugatti had a Formula 1 safety concept adapted for the Veyron. All these technical details combine to make the Veyron a truly exceptional super sports car.
The automobile uses the same launch control technology as Formula 1 racing cars to reach maximum traction force from first to seventh gear and up to 400 km/h maximum speed.
The Veyron's electronically controlled acceleration takes the car from standstill position beyond the 400 km/h threshold in less than one minute. Just activate launch control, engage gear, control the steering wheel, place your left foot on the brake, and keep your right foot on full throttle. If you release the brakes swiftly, you will accelerate on a par with veritable Formula 1 cars.
The mighty, 1,001-horsepower sixteen-cylinder four-wheel drive can be felt and driven through a wide spectrum of revolutions per minute. Constant 250 km/h require only 270-280 of the Veyron's horsepower. More than 700 HP are continuously "on standby" for quick and fast interludes. In other words: at 1,000 r.p.m., only slightly above idling, the Veyron has 730 Newton meter torque available. Between 2,200 and 5,500 r.p.m., 1,250 Newton meter torque are permanently accessible. No other production vehicle has ever offered comparable torques. With this kind of power and pull, the Veyron manages racecourses as easily and competently as lonely mountain passes or rushhour traffic in Tokyo.

Alex and Kevin nonchalantly sauntered onstage escorted by a pair of "umbrella girls." What, may you ask, are umbrella girls? Well, many racing teams employ comely young women to wear tight outfits on race day and, well, carry umbrellas. (It can get pretty darn hot in the sun on a race track, you know.) Why Alex and Kevin would need the sun-shielding services of these women in an enclosed studio that's refrigerated to approximately 30 degrees Fahrenheit at all times is beyond us. But it probably had something to do with today's main topic, drift racing. That might also explain the heap of Yokohama racing tires (MSRP: $350 each) piled on the studio floor.
What's up with all the racing gear? Apparently, Yoshi has become a fan of the newfangled motor sport that involves sliding your car in a controlled sideways drift. "I want to do it all the time!" Yoshi declared. "I think I'm addicted." (Automobile drivers in the Los Angeles area may want to take note.)
Also, it's worth mentioning that our Firefox Throwdown is going swimmingly: Not only has spreadfirefox.com's challenge of 1 million downloads in 10 days get blown out six days early, but The Screen Savers is the #1 referrer with a commanding 27,000. (Second place goes to Overclockers Club with 12,000. "Bring it on, Overclockers Club!" raved a frothing Alex.)

Drifting Away
Yoshi and Dan filed a taped report from the first-ever North American Formula D Championship for drift racing held just last August in Irwindale, Calif. While Dan preoccupied himself with the previously mentioned umbrella girls, Yoshi got into the pits with drivers to find out more about this new sport.
So what the heck is drift racing? Well, it's not a "race" in the traditional sense -- it's more of a showdown to see who can drift their car sideways with the most style and control. In other words, it's a fight with the laws of physics to look cool.
"It's figure-skating with cars," said Ken Gushi, the youngest driver on the U.S. drift circuit. (Ken had his driver's license suspended recently. "For all the young fellows out there, no drifting on the street," he said.)
American Formula D Champion Samuel "The Crazy Swede" Hubinette visited The Screen Savers and offered a small demonstration in the parking lot. Although he drives a Dodge Viper in competition as a member of Lateral G Racing (and is actually sponsored by DaimlerChrysler's racing unit, Team Mopar), Samuel smoked the tires on a new BMW. How did a Swedish citizen find himself drift racing in America?
"I'm used to sliding on snow and ice, so I thought I'd try it," said Samuel. "It's exciting for both the driver and the spectators. It's explosive -- you can watch it all happen in 30 seconds from start to finish."
Meanwhile, female racer Verena Mei aims to prove that drift racing isn't just for male competitors.
"There are a lot of challenges," Verena said. "People don't expect me to get in the car and be fearless. But every step of the way, I'm progressing."

LED vs. Laser: Which Will Rule?
Kevin and Alex got the latest Logitech laser mouse to see how it'd perform against the tried and true LED models from Microsoft. The Logitech purports to have 20 times more sensitivity to surface detail than a traditional LED model. The guys placed both mice on a white surface and discovered that, yes, the Logitech's laser tracking was far superior. However, they still liked the feel of Microsoft's "Tilt Wheel" scroll button over Logitech's "Cruise Control" rocker. So if you're a gamer, you might consider staying with the ol' MS LED models.

As the new millennium approached, the SL was a decade old and customers were turning to more modern cars like the Jaguar XK8.
In 2001, an all-new SL (initially just a 5.0 L SL500 version) went on sale, boasting the "Vario-Roof", an electric folding steel roof which had been seen on the smaller, cheaper SLK in 1997. A 5.0 L 302 hp (225 kW) V8 was optional, with a 5.5 L AMG V8 appearing in 2004's SL55 AMG. V12 engines are available in the SL600 and the limited-production SL65 AMG.
The Facelifted 2008 SL model was revealed in the Geneva Motor Show in March. The 2008 SL gets a new front end reflecting Merc's new design philosophy, with a pair of long powerdomes on the bonnet and a single-bar grille replacing the old three-bar effort. Also inprovments have been made on the engines as the 3.5L V6 is uprated to 311 PS at 6500 rpm. Compared to the previous 3.5-litre engine, the output has been boosted by 16 percent. Torque has also been improved adding 10Nm to the previous 350Nm making it 360Nm. this engine now can rev up to a max of 7200 rpm for a period as the oil temperature and other engine parameters permitting, a higher compression ratio, a new intake manifold and extensively modifying and lightening the valve train. In this case, however, the extra power does not come at the expense of fuel economy: with a consumption figure of 9.9 litres per 100 kilometres, the new SL 350 undercuts the previous model developing 200 kW by 0.4 litres per 100 kilometres. Mercedes-Benz is extending the SL-Class line-up by introducing an attractive entry-level model in the shape of the SL 280 developing 170 kW. The six cylinder powerplant delivers its peak torque of 300 Nm from 2500 rpm and accelerates the roadster from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.8 seconds, whilst fuel consumption (NEDC) is just 9.4 litres per 100 kilometres. It will feature the AIRSCARF heating system used in the SLK. The car is already production as it will go on sale later in spring 2008

A suprising move made by AMG to replace the outgoing SL55 AMG with the newer M156 engine SL63 AMG. It features the newer M156 6.2L V8 used in the S63 AMG, CLK63 AMG and C63 AMG. It produces 525 PS at 6800 rpm and 630Nm of torque at 5200 rpm. It can accelerate from rest to 100 km/h (62mph) in 4.6 second going up to a limited top speed of 250km/h (155mph). Also the SL63 AMG has the new AMG developed 7-speed MCT "Multi Clutch Technology" semi-automatic transmission. This uses a twin clutch design, a first for Mercedes and AMG. It features a compact, wet start-up clutch and double declutching. it's fitted with four drive modes: "C" (Comfort), "S" (Sport), "S+" (Sport plus) and "M" (Manual) and boasts 100 millisecond shifts in "M" mode. the new car features the new AMG DRIVE UNIT with innovative Race Start function. The AMG DRIVE UNIT is the central control unit for the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission and all driving dynamics functions. The driver can change gears either using the new AMG selector lever with its leather/ carbon-fibre finish, or by nudging the AMG steering-wheel shift paddles. The new Race start Function is basicly a launch control system which enables the SL 63 AMG driver to call on maximum acceleration, while ensuring optimum traction of the driven wheels. A modified version of the SL 63 is the safety car for the 2008 Formula One season.

Formula One teams sound off on Mosley reports
Formula One teams and manufacturers are questioning whether Max Mosley can stay on as FIA president following a sex scandal. Toyota, Honda, BMW and Mercedes-Benz all issued statements Thursday expressing disappointment over Mosley's behavior, but stopped short of calling for his resignation.
